FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Velocomp power meters measure accurately the forces OPPOSING your bike’s movement down the road: wind, hills, acceleration, and friction.

Conventional power meters measure the forces you’re APPLYING to the bike’s pedals.

And here’s the magic: Newton’s 3rd law says that the net forces opposing your riding are exactly equal to the forces you apply on the pedals.

So, now you know how it is that conventional power meters measure the same numbers as Velocomp power meters… ☺

1. Velocomp’s unique handlebar mounting position means no swapping-out the pedals, crank, bottom bracket, or rear wheel already on your bike.

2. Use your one Velocomp power meter with all your bikes: road, TT, MTB, fat, recumbent, tandem…you name it!

3. It’s super-easy (and 60 second fast) to move your Velocomp power meter between bikes: watch this video!

4. Velocomp sensors accurately measure, up to 800 times a second, the power produced by BOTH of your legs. Low-priced competitive power meters measure the power of one leg only.

5. Velocomp’s patented sensor technology makes power measurement accurate and affordable—as little as $199

6. If you’re new to power measurement you’ll have questions. Velocompforum.com is a lively place where you get fast and personalized answers, often from the Velocomp CEO.

7. PowerPod is the only power meter in the world that instantly and accurately measures hill slope, telling you the steepness of the hill you’re climbing.

8. PowerPod is the only power meter in the world that instantly and accurately measures wind speed. On windy days you’ll not only know your power, but also the strength of the wind is you’re fighting.

9. If you ride with a Garmin bike computer, Velocomp’s free ConnectIQ app shows your power, wind speed, and hill slope on your Garmin during the ride. And if you own an AeroPod, you’ll also see live CdA and Time Advantage information.

1. If your goal is going faster, PowerPod power interval training is the best way to improve your body’s cycling strength, and stamina. PowerPod provides the key metric—power—that is the basis of all power training programs. We sell the bible of power training: Hunter Allen’s Training and Racing with a Power Meter

2. If your goal is general physical fitness, PowerPod gives you an easy, accurate, sensitive way to measure your fitness and calorie exertion.

3. If you do long rides, PowerPod helps you manage your riding intensity so you don’t burn-out before the ride’s end.

1. A 20 minute Fitness Test (FTP Test) establishes your baseline of leg and lung strength.

2. Structured Interval Training Workouts, customized to your FTP level and cycling goals, quickly and systematically improve your cycling performance.

3. As you improve you’ll periodically update your FTP fitness level, notching-up your workout intensity correspondingly.

4. The result? You’ll ride faster and farther in as little as 6 weeks (and you’ll probably lose some weight also…).

When you ride a bike, one of the main forces slowing you down is the opposing wind. How much the wind slows you down depends not only on the speed of the wind, but also how much drag resistance your body and bike present to the wind.

In cycling, aerodynamics testing refers to measuring and reducing the drag resistance you and your bike present to the wind.

The measurement used for aerodynamic drag is a number called CdA. CdA represents the combined effect of the area presented by the cyclist and bike (“A”), and a factor that accounts for the “slipperiness” of that area (Coefficient of Drag, or “Cd”).

The lower your CdA, the easier it is for you to fight the wind.

Reduced CdA means that, for a given amount of power, you will go faster. That’s why you’ll see cyclists riding with aero bars…or skin suits…or in tucked racing positions. All of those things are done in order to reduce CdA, and to reduce the slowing effect of wind.

Before AeroPod, CdA measurements were confined to wind tunnels and velodromes…places where the cyclist would be surrounded by technicans, computers, and special sensors. CdA measurement was a time consuming… and expensive… process.

AeroPod is measures your CdA as you ride your bike, using patented technology pioneered by Velocomp in 2008.

There are two ways to use AeroPod:

1) Aerodynamic testing on a closed course. Vary ride position, equipment, clothing, using AeroPod to quantify the aerodynamic benefit of the changes.

2) On-the-road CdA measurement, where AeroPod provides real-time feedback of changes in your CdA due to ride position, on your training and racing routes.

Improving your power output will make you faster. Lowering your CdA will also make you faster. AeroPod helps you achieve both!
